Artichoke (Cynarae folium):
One of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. The large, lobed leaves of the plant and their extracts are used for folk medicine purposes.
It was already consumed by the ancient Greeks, spreading from Sicily to Europe from the 9th century, although the size of an artichoke at that time was only a hen’s egg. Today, Italians, Spaniards and French grow the most of it.
In 1850, a French doctor treated a boy with jaundice with artichokes for a month because none of the medicines used at the time could help him. This case inspired researchers to conduct further experiments, and it is thanks to this that we know so much about the extract today.
It was an expensive delicacy in the ancient world: not so much for its taste as for its supposed aphrodisiac effect. Although this has not been scientifically proven, artichokes are very common thanks to Mediterranean cuisine.
